Breaking stress of neutron star crust

چکیده
The breaking stress (the maximum of the stress–strain curve) of neutron star crust is important for neutron star physics including pulsar glitches, emission of gravitational waves from static mountains and flares from star quakes. We perform many molecular dynamic simulations of the breaking stress at different coupling parameters (inverse temperatures) and strain rates. We describe our results with the Zhurkov model of strength. We apply this model to estimate the breaking stress for time-scales ∼1 s–1 yr, which are most important for applications, but much longer than can be directly simulated. At these time-scales, the breaking stress depends strongly on the temperature. For coupling parameter 200 matter breaks at very small stress, if it is applied for a few years. This viscoelastic creep can limit the lifetime of mountains on neutron stars. We also suggest an alternative model of time-scale-independent breaking stress, which can be used to estimate an upper limit on the breaking stress.

Breaking strain of neutron star crust and gravitational waves.
Mountains on rapidly rotating neutron stars efficiently radiate gravitational waves. The maximum possible size of these mountains depends on the breaking strain of the neutron star crust. With multimillion ion molecular dynamics simulations of Coulomb solids representing the crust, we show that the breaking strain of pure single crystals is very large and that impurities, defects, and grain bou...
متن کاملMolecular Dynamics Simulations of Accreting Neutron Star Crust
Material accreting on a neutron star can undergo rapid proton capture nucleosynthesis to produce a variety of nuclei up to mass numbers around 100. This complex rp ash then undergoes electron capture as it is buried to higher densities. We perform molecular dynamics simulations to determine how this material freezes to form new neutron star crust. In addition, from our simulations we calculate ...
متن کاملDurability of Neutron Star Crust
How long do neutron star mountains last? The durability of elastically deformed crust is important for neutron star physics including pulsar glitches, emission of gravitational waves from static mountains, and flares from star quakes. The durability is defined by the strength properties of the Yukawa crystals of ions, which make up the crust. In this paper we extend our previous results [Mon. N...
متن کاملQuaking Neutron Stars
Gravitational, magnetic and superfluid forces can stress the crust of an evolving neutron star. Fracture of the crust under these stresses could affect the star’s spin evolution and generate high-energy emission. We study the growth of strain in the crust of a spinning down, magnetized neutron star and examine the initiation of crust cracking (a starquake). In preliminary work (Link, Franco & E...

The recent discovery of high frequency oscillations during giant flares from the Soft Gamma Repeaters SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 may be the first direct detection of vibrations in a neutron star crust. If this interpretation is correct it offers a novel means of testing the neutron star equation of state, crustal breaking strain, and magnetic field configuration. We review the observational da...
